Why a Certain Generation of People Made Such Bad Parents

Acknowledging the truth will give us the power to break the cycle.

There’s a reason entire generations of people are throwing themselves into therapy and online discourse about things like “narcissistic parents”. We make excuses, we “um” and we “er” but the truth remains staring at us in the face. Many of us had terrible parents, and a lot of those parents belong to the Baby Boomer generation.

What happened? Why did they leave us with so much resentment? So many scars. That’s where the new truth comes in. The understanding that we are moving into a new age of enlightenment, and with that enlightenment comes realities we’d rather not accept.

One of those realities? The Baby Boomer generation was a generation of overwhelming bad parenting beliefs and behaviors. Was it their fault? Should we let them off the hook? Understanding how they came to their woeful parenting skills can motivate us to move on with greater compassion.
