What Your Language Can Say About You
Be careful with your language. It reveals more about you than you realize.
A few weeks ago, I watched a relatively well-respected TikTok psychologist rant against NLP practitioners. He called the whole thing a sham and derided anyone who engaged in the MIT-invented practice as a “charlatan”. The whole time he went on his tirade, I focused on his language (the central theme of NLP) and it revealed a lot about him.
There were a lot of name-dropping of prestigious institutions he had attended. There was a clear delineation between what he saw as “on par” with his practice, and what he saw as “subpar” practice. Throughout, he was using misinformation and terms which directly minimized the process students undergo to become NLPs.
What this popular social media psychiatrist had revealed about himself in this tirade was stunning. Not only was there a clear misunderstanding of NLP, there was substantial rage, and an obvious air of superiority and privilege dripping from his speech.
In just a few minutes, this mental health “professional” revealed that he reviled anyone who didn’t see and practice mental health precisely as he did. There was no reaching for knowledge or understanding, it was an outright dismissal of anyone who didn’t meet his outdated projections…
