Q. What is immaturity and how do I deal with it? (via Quora)

A. Immaturity looks like a lot of different things to different people. Overall, it centers around behaviors and outlooks. Someone who is immature is generally someone who has no awareness or control over their emotions. They react to the environment around them, rather than processing and responding in-kind.

Immaturity also manifests in our behaviors with others and the beliefs we use to justify them. For example, an immature partner might engage in regular infidelity. Because they lack emotional awareness, they do whatever they want and don’t consider how it may affect their partner. It’s all about them — just like a child.

The only real way to deal with it is to choose not to engage with it. Someone behaviors and beliefs ultimately have to be changed by them. To engage in conflict with an immature person will only lead to immature and petty fighting. For the best result, sit down and have an honest conversation about how you feel. But know, serious choices may have to be made if you don’t want to deal with this behavior long-term.
