If Taylor Swift Is Such an Activist, Where Is She Right Now?

We should use the term “activist” loosely when talking about Taylor Swift and her legion of fans.

Every week, I get a handful of messages from well-meaning Taylor Swift fans who want to change my opinion. The content of the videos is usually the same. Some interview from 2016, with an “energized” Taylor talking about women’s rights and how hard it is to be a woman. It’s a good talk. It’s borderline convincing, even. But this pop idol hasn’t been able to fool me, yet.

That’s because I have long seen Taylor for what she is. Specifically, I’ve always seen Taylor’s “activism” (get used to those quotes, folks, because there’s going to be a lot of them) for what it is. Performative. A ploy to make money.

Carefully crafting her persona around women’s rights and LGBTQ+ equality since 2016, Taylor has poised herself and her brand as a progressive one. Ask any of Taylor’s fans and they’ll tell you. She’s a woman who really *stands* for something. She’s fighting the good fight and making life better for women of all walks of life — across the globe!

Root yourself in reality and things look a little different.

Real activism doesn’t look for a convenient opportunity.
