Q. Why is it so difficult to “turn my mind off” and sleep through the night and how to get a good night’s sleep? (via Tumblr)

A. A. Sleep is such a crucial part of our mental and physical wellness. In order to be strong and emotionally resilient enough to handle the stress of everyday life, our brains need to be able to rest and recharge at night.

When that doesn’t happen, we can find ourselves exhausted and dealing with increased stress in our lives, relationships, and even our careers. There could be a lot of reasons you’re struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep, and theses could come down to issues as simple as using your phone too much, to real medical issues which need to be addressed with a professional.
As I’m not really sure about your specific situation, all I can do is give you a few pointers and some encouragement.

When it comes to “turning your mind off” before bed, a great way to start is by building a solid bedtime routine. This helps us set up a circadian rhythm which signals a release of brain chemicals that help us get to sleep.
Set up a process that you get used to doing every night before bed. While preparing you for bed, this routine should include calming activities like meditation, reading, or even mindful journaling — and should minimize the use of technology or digital devices.

Beyond that, you can work on resolving any deeper emotional issues that might be going on. When you’re depressed or dealing with anxiety or stress, your brain becomes hyper-focused on protecting you from those things, which makes it hard to sleep. If you’re going through a hard time, open up to someone you can really trust and figure out how to alleviate some of that stress.

Best of luck to you!
